How to set up before editing
When setting up to edit you first need to login to the computer using a local login which is a login that only your class use to keep the work safe as your class is the only ones who uses the account. It also prevents illness issues as if one of you are off sick the others can keep working as it's not on one of your own accounts and all of your class have access to the local login.
The next step is getting your images off of your SD card. First put your SD card in the the back of the computer and it should come up on the on the desktop. click on the SD card to open the folder and find the clips you plan to use. Also remember when you take the SD card to eject the SD card and wait for it to disappear from the desktop and then you can take i out of the computer.
After finding your footage you then need to go into the Movies folder and make a folder with the name of your project. You can create a new folder by going up to file and then selecting new folder which will then bring up a folder for you to name. Then go inside that folder and make three new folders and names them Footage, Sound and Audio. You name the folders so it is tidier and less confusing to have exactly what it is on the folder. If you change the name of the folder during the editing process then the computer will struggle to find the correct folders as it makes paths for the computer to follow and when that changes it will not be able to follow that path.
Then go back to your SD card and Drag all of your clips into the footage file and sort out which ones you plan to use and delete the clips you don't plan to use. You must also have a folder for your audio and sound effects so make folders with these as names and when ready to add sounds put them into these folders.
After you've done that you are ready to open up the software which will be Premiere Pro and you should receive a screen and you have to click new project after that should bring up Premiere Pro Project completely blank.
In this there is a space to put all your footage, so make the same three folders of Footage,Sound and Audio then drag your Footage into the Footage folder and put your audio and sound into their folders and your ready to start editing. Putting them is separate folders allows you to keep tidy and prevents you from searching for your audio in a folder full of footage.
Lastly drag your footage, sounds and audio onto the timeline and start editing. When saving you should save it along side the three folders and just save it as you normally would save anything.
This is the shot list which is a plan of every scene we are going to film. Also explaining what type of shot it is and if there are any camera movement.
This is the risk assessment it is all about possible health risks and anything that can be considered dangerous and how to stop it from happening.
This is a budgeting sheet and is to show were we went to film, how we got there and how much it costed.
This is the talent release this is to prove that the actor has permission to be filmed.
This is the location release and this it to prove that we are allowed to use the location that we are going to film at.
The storyboards are to show scene by scene what is going on and what is said and what is the music. This is to help when it comes to filming and you need to know what to film.
In the filmmaking industry editing is a huge importance and
can make or break a movie. If the editing is poor, it will take the audience
out of the experience and can cause confusions. If editing Techniques are used
poorly then the audience will pick up on it and will remind them that they are
watching and not experiencing the protagonist's life. If the cuts are terrible
it can confuse the audience like if a match on action is cut terribly then the
audience won't get what the action is. Transitions also need to be used correctly
such as quick cuts in a change of angle during a fight scene and fades to
indicate the passing of time same with the dissolve and wipe are usually used
to show time passing. The editing term cut was named because before editing was
done digitally the footage used to literally get cut and spliced back together
to get rid of footage that isn't needed.
Editing has a direct link to the filming as the director may
do combining shots and will need the editor to add these together to make one
big sequence, so it is the editor's job is to make the sequence look good
together and make the shots look continuous. In the film industry there are two
ways of filming, the first is digital and the other is film. These both have
their benefits and disadvantages however in college we had to use digital as
film would have been too time consuming as you can't look at what you've filmed
until the next day and that wouldn't be ideal. When filming digitally you can
look at your footage straight away to find if you got the scene right and redo.
However, some say that filming with film has a better quality.
The film industry has been around for a while, it all
started in 1895 where the first screening ever of a movie was played, the whole
movie was a crowd leaving work, although it was a simple concept it amazed people
of their time that images were moving in front of their eyes. After that a man
by the name of Georges Melies was inspired by this idea and want to take it
further so he started making his own movies. Whilst filming for one of his
films Melie's camera jammed and accidentally invented what we call today the
jump cut this was spectacular to see for an audience when a bus turned into a
hearse so Melies started using it in other films to create a narrative and went
on to create fade ins and fade outs, overlapping dissolves and stop motion
photography. Although Melies changed filmmaking dramatically he was still stuck
in the theatre mind and never changed the angle of his camera. After this a man
by the name of Edwin Porter took editing to a new level by using cuts to show
the passing of time. The next to step up and take editing further was David
Griffith who invented the cut in which in which he took a scene and moved it
from a long shot to medium shot creating a whole new perspective on films by
moving the camera Griffith figured out that the camera and what where it is
placed can create various different environments. Griffith then went on the
make various techniques and films including Birth of a nation which received a
lot of negative feedback as it showed the KKK as heroes which obviously didn't`
go well with its audience.
The scene I have chosen to depict is the sequence in Shaun
of the dead in which the protagonist and his friend are devising a plan to
rescue their friends and family. This scene is cut in a unique way in which the
cuts are quick making the scene move faster. When making a film there is a
process called the continuity which is a few different techniques in film that
make all of the scenes fit together to make lots of little shots that go
together to make one big scene however the continuity techniques makes sure
that it doesn't have any mistakes. The first technique is establishing shots
which is a shot at the beginning of a sequence normally a shot of a city or
countryside and is normally wide shot and shows where the protagonist of the
scene is and where the action is going to take place. the scene I have chosen
does not have an establishing shot however here is an establishing shot from
the James Bond franchise.
The next technique is the 180-degree rule which is a basic
rule that is basically just a rule to stop mistakes with the angle at which the
camera is placed during a conversation between two people. this rule stops the
camera changing the characters to different sides of the scene which can
confuse the audience if the characters look similar, it also stops the actor
start walking in one direction and then in the next scene walking in a
completely different direction. At 0:29 there is a shot where the 180 degree is
used and is not broken and keeps the characters on the correct sides and keeps
them in the same sides for the rest of the sequence.
The next technique is the shot reverse shot which where one
character is looking at someone or something off screen and then it transitions
to the other character looking back to the first character and the first
character is then off screen, so it is a transitions from one character to the
next who are looking at each other but and not in the same shot. At 0:59 there
is a shot reverse shot with both of the characters and having a conversation
and it transition between them.
Another technique is the match on action which is the first
shot being an action that the character is about to perform and then the next
shot is a close up of them doing the action for example, a character going to
open a car door and the close up is the character grabbing a pulling the door
handle. In my scene at 1:19 there is a match on action where the character is
running to the door and then it cuts to a close up of the door bell being rang.
The next technique is eye line match cuts which is basically
having the character staring at an object and then it cutting to what he was
looking at however keeping the object in the right place for the audience to
think that the character was actually looking the object. In my scene there is an
eye line match cut at 1:40 with the characters both looking at the TV and then
showing that they were looking down at the TV.
When making a film you need to be able to relate to the
characters and this can be achieved through editing by giving the right amount
of screen time, using close-ups, point of views and reaction shots.in my scene
you really get an idea of what kind of characters these two men are and is done
by using lots of screen time giving time to see the character develop over the
course of the film in this scene it’s all about the two men and almost all
scene have the two men in. In the scene I have chosen there and many close ups
on the main character and his friend, for an example there is one at 0:22 close-ups give the audience an idea of what the character’s mood is by focusing
on facial expressions.
Point of views are used to see exactly what the
character sees and what environment he is in this can be used for different
effects but it is to get an idea of what they are seeing. My scene doesn't have
any Point of views however I found an image showing what a Point of view would
look like.
Reaction shots are used to get an idea of what the character
is think by using only facial expressions and a reaction. In my scene at 1:00
there is a reaction shot of the protagonists reacting to something the other
character said, his reaction was a frustrated/angry reaction telling the
audience he's not happy with the comment from his friend causing him to make a
negative reaction.
There are also other types of techniques used such as shot
variation which is a technique used to create a sequence of images to make movement.
Shot variation can be used in many shot including wide shot for example.
The
next technique is montage which is a series of quick shots put together to
condense time and information and gives the effect of time passing or gives the
director a chance to reduce a large portion of information.
The next technique
is giving and withholding information which is the effect of giving information
about a character's background to make you sympathize with them or withholding
information which is usually used to create tension and is commonly in murder
mysteries withholding the information of who the killer is. This usually ends up with a big pay off that surprises the audience and which usually leads to a big twist in the story.
Another technique
is parallel editing which is more than one story or scene going on
simultaneously cutting between the different scenes and usually come together
to mean the same thing and culminating together.
The next technique is editing
rhythm which is to edit to match what is happening in the scene such as slow editing
would have a clam scene and fast editing would be an action scene. This is massive towards the tone and subconsciously gets the audience feeling different as if there are quick cuts they would be more on edge and if there is slow cut the audience would be more relaxed without them even thinking about it.
The next
technique is cutting to soundtrack which is just cutting the shots to fit the
music. This can be used for example to edit a song around a fight scene and
would cut shots when the song changes beats.
Another technique is multiple points of
view which the camera showing the story from each character's point of view
simultaneously and will cut quickly between each character's view. This can be effective when going of a certain effect and can make the audience think about whats going on.
The next
technique is cutaways which is focusing on a subject and cutting to a shot
completely unrelated and then cutting back to the original subject. This can be used in many different ways and can make the audience confused for effect of could show something that may come up in the plot later on.
The last
technique is jump-cuts which is having an object on scene and then cutting the
camera and moving the object away causing it to look like it has disappeared.
This could also be used to show the passing of time.
I had to plan, film and edit to make an advert for a Unilever
product with a group of two other peers in my class. We had chosen to make an
advert for flora as we all liked the idea of coming out of a unique product
rather than just re-branding to change the target audience. we made an advert
introducing a new product, the butter stick which is essentially a glue stick
but has butter rather than glue making it easier to butter toast. We planned to
make the advert split screen with one side using the butter stick and the other
side using normal butter to try and show the butter stick side being quicker
than the normal method. We want the advertisement to end with the butter stick
user
being done before the other and looking pleased as he takes
a bite out of his toast. the target audience was originally for home owners and
parents as they would buy it for the whole family to use. we decided to change
it to teenagers and more specifically people at university as they are more
likely to want to make a quick meal rather than spending time cooking and toast
is fast to make and with the butter stick there is less to wash up.
I didn't get feedback from the class as the other groups had
finished early and got their feedback before the deadline, are group didn't get
a chance for feedback after the deadline so we didn't receive feedback from the
class. This would have help as are class are the right age for the target
audience although they are not at university they are the right age to get
helpful feedback from. I feel this was effective for the audience we aimed at
as we showed that teens can wake up from a long night and can make a quick
breakfast with ease. This advertisement gave the impact of a quick and hassle
free meal which is what we wanted to achieve.
I think aesthetically my advertisement looks good with a
filter on the side that uses the normal butter to give off the effect that
using the butter stick will make your day brighter and better. I also big part
of the aesthetics is the split screen that works well as you can see the
comparison of the two days however there was a complication with the split
screen and it was the fact that we needed to cut %50 of the screen, so when we
shot the advert we were expecting to be able to use the whole shot, so some of our
scenes look aesthetically bad as we had to cut the shot. the sound we used was
created by one of the peer in my group and was made on garage band and is a
cheerful tune that fits the theme of the advert. The mise-en-scene was done
well as the setting was supposed to be exactly the same in both sides of the
screen and all of the objects and background setting were the same and
consistent throughout.
In my opinion the advert sells the product showing that the
product can save time with the background music being upbeat putting emphasis
on the early morning start being easier with our product. The story line is
consistent with someone waking up and showing their routine of making toast
however the side using our product is done making his toast before the other
showing the product is useful. It fits our new target audience well as most
teens would struggle with time in the morning and the butter stick being more
convenient.
This advert use one of the persuasion technique and it is
the comparison technique by using normal butter on one side of the screen and
our product on the other side trying to show that our product is faster to use.
We identified with our target audience by using an actor the right age showing
that it is for that age gap. We also used the early morning theme as most of
our target audience teens typically dislike mornings. We showed the butter
stick to be time friendly also showing are target audience it is for them as
most teens are looking for a quick, stress free meal. We used AIDA which is an acronym for attention, interest, desire and action. AIDA is a way of looking to see if your advert will be effective towards your target audience. We have attention when the advert starts and it double screen which is fairly unique from other adverts and will get the audience drawn in. The audience will be interested with the idea that the target audience is featured allowing them to relate to the situation. The audience will desire the product after they see how quick and easy it is to use. The audience will then use action to go and find the product in the store.
Overall our advertisement fits the purpose by aiming at our
target audience effectively. i looked at the BCAP code to see if the advert is
acceptable and I looked at the alcohol rules as we feature and scene of the
camera panning from right to left a showing alcohol and could have broken the
rules regarding alcohol. I have now checked and I have not broken any of the
rules.
Looking back on are original intentions we stayed pretty
close not change anything, sticking to our storyboard and shot list. Everything
went to plan and nothing changed from the original plans. We documented all of
our planning by doing shot list, storyboards and forms allowing us to use
certain locations. I am satisfied with our advert and believe it sells the
product to the right audience and aesthetically looks good. If I could do
anything differently I would have done some of the scenes again as some of them
had to be cut by %50 to do split screen and made some scenes look odd. In
pre-production I had done an equal amount of work to my peers, in the filming I
missed the first day of filming as I couldn't get there as we were filming at a
house and I didn't have a bus pass the second day of filming I got there a help
do the remaining scenes. The editing I did a large amount of as I wanted to
practice as I hadn't done much editing up to that point and I wanted to.
In are advert we have a split screen throughout with one side using the butter stick and the other using normal spread on butter. It will start with the student waking up from a night out and he is hungover. he gets out of bed and it transitions to him walking down the stairs to the kitchen. He then picks up what looks like a glass of water and takes a sip, he spits it out as he realises it is vodka. its dose a pan around the kitchen and the audience see that it is a mess. He goes through the cupboards looking for something to eat and finds some bread then goes to the fridge and on one side he finds the normal spread on butter and on the other side has the butter stick the one using the butter stick will quickly make toast and as he is sitting down eating the toast whilst other side with the spread on butter is still buttering proving that it is quicker to use the butter stick it then ends with the product flashing up with the sologne saying ''its way butter in a stick''.
In my pitch i think i spoke clearly and the audience could understand all of the key points. all of my key points were covered and explained to the best of my ability. I also think i explained the synopsis of my advertisement well and gave a clear idea of what my advert would be like. If i could do it again i would have spoken louder to the audience and although i did keep eye contact with the audience for some of my pitch i was still looking at my Que cards which made me look unprepared and looked like i didn't know what to say next however this is not the case i think it was just down to nerves. All round the class feed back was good, they mostly said the information on my presentation was good and was explained well. they also said that i was not loud enough when presenting and although they understood the points i was getting across they could barely hear me.
I got my final feedback from my teacher with things i did well and things i can improve. The things i did well were i had a detailed presentation and also introduced the BCAP code well and impressed my teacher by making all the changes to my presentation that was originally given. My idea for a re branding was good and would work as a real Advert. The target audience was also well done. I was also well prepared and spoke clearly. Lastly i knew my idea very well and gave me confidence. What i can improve on is the volume of my voice as it was quiet i also read from the Que cards most of the time rather than using Ques. Lastly nerves got to me a little bit making me ''umm'' throughout the presentation.
I have now finished my creating presentation and have presented it to a few of of my classmates to get feedback to improve on. I got feedback from two classmates.
Mollie-
Clear presentation
Good explanation of Brut
Cant see the picture of the Psycho-graphic table
Good pitch of re-branded product
Clear distribution plan
Kain-
Less writing needed for it to be a good presentation
Speak louder when doing the actual presentation
Idea for advert is good
Good analysis of the adverts
Too much information
Too long winded
BARB slide is good
I will now go and edit my presentation to make as many of these improvements as i can.
Unilever is a company who own/support a huge amount of brands. I am going to research some of the different brands by watching and discussing some of the advertisements the brands have made.
Flora: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H8G9RKU3tWs
The flora advertisement Fit by Katie is a unorthodox way of advertising and this is because they use embarrassing family story's that people can relate to and then have the child narrate it in a clueless way to make a crude joke sound innocent, they throw in tiny bits on promotion such as the little girl saying it low fat very quickly before carrying on with the story. they go off of the innocent child gimmick. This is aimed at anyone however the joke of the advert is anyone older than twelve, you could also argue that the animation style is aimed at kids however most kid wouldn't get the embarrassing joke that is the main point of the advert.
Lynx:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqD5SecdNbs
This is a advert for Lynx that promotes the fact that he smell of lynx's makes girls want you and plays of the fact that angles represents beautiful girls and then use the slogan hat even angles will fall. The fact that a deodorant would make girls more attracted to you is ridiculous, however puts across the idea that it dose smell good.
